Hello GrindStop 2014 Shore Crew Volunteers!
We have a lot of information to get out there, so please make sure you read through everything here. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask. We cannot discuss any campaign strategy over email, so please save those questions for your team leaders while on the ground.
You will receive contact information for your team leaders about a week to a few days before you arrive in the islands. This is so when you arrive you can contact your team and they can direct you to where you need to go. We are not giving out our team housing addresses, for security reasons.
All the policies listed below you must sign and agree to. If you have any issues with these policies, please let me know. However, we will not be changing our rules for the campaign. We are giving an overview of these policies in case anyone has a problem with our rules. You could back out if you feel you need to before canceling a flight or ferry becomes too expensive. Below you will find a synopsis of each policy.
If you are part of a media team, documentary crew, or an independent journalist – and have talked to me about covering this campaign, and you feel our media policy does not apply to you, please let me know. I will put you in touch with Lisa Agabian, our media director, and you two can work out any problems within the media contract. You will sign these policies once you arrive on the grounds. Failure to do so will result in terminating your involvement with the campaign.
Media Policy: It states that all “pretty shots” of the islands are your own. If a Grind occurs, those photos will be property of Sea Shepherd, and will need to be reviewed to see if we would like to use them before you can post anything on social media. Please also note our social media policy. You will not be allowed to give out information, photos, or videos regarding strategic details or team training.
Only approved Sea Shepherd spokespeople can talk with the media. If the media asks you for a comment, please direct them to your team leader. They will contact GrindStop’s media team for you.
Liability Waiver: Sea Shepherd is not liable if you are arrested or injured while on campaign. We will not instruct anyone to break the law or interfere with a whale killer, should the need be. However, the opportunity to interfere and then be arrested will be available to you should a grind occur. We do intend to act to save whales. Also, you have the right to defend yourself if assaulted. We have informed the police that we will defend ourselves if attacked.
Volunteer Agreement: Each volunteer is expected to follow the guidance and direction of the campaign leaders. Failure to do so will result in a volunteer being removed from the campaign. Should that happen, the police will be notified of the identity of anyone removed from the campaign. Sea Shepherd is not and never has been a democracy. Should you have questions or concerns about the instructions
given to you by your team leader, you are encouraged to discuss your concerns with Scott or Rosie; however, you will need to follow the guidance at the time it is given and discuss it afterwards. No one will be instructed or directed to break any laws.

Vegan Policy: The Sea Shepherd Global Vegan Policy is attached. It is very simple, because we are sharing housing and everyone is responsible for their own food, we need to be respectful of everyone’s dietary choices. We encourage all people who are concerned about the oceans to avoid sea food at all times. The consumption of sea food while on campaign is not acceptable. We do not require anyone to be vegan, but we do need all volunteers to be respectful. In a shared housing space, just like on a ship, it is important to keep morale up and team relationships healthy. All volunteers will benefit from the cooking spaces because food is very expensive in the Faroe Islands. We encourage everyone to at least try a vegetarian lifestyle while on campaign, but again that is not mandatory. Should someone prepare eggs or even a hamburger in the shared kitchen, that is OK and they should not be attacked for that. At the same time,
vegetarians and carnivores need to understand that the consumption of animal products can be quite offensive to some. Please be considerate of each other. We anticipate that some vegan food will be donated to the campaign. Should that occur, it will be shared evenly across all teams and volunteers.
Another thing to consider for this campaign is that the Faroese people argue that the consumption of pilot whale is necessary for their survival. That may have been true at some point in the past, but it is not true today. No one will go hungry, much less starve, if no more pilot whales are slaughtered and consumed. However, alternatives to seafood and sheep, while not unavailable, are expensive and
difficult to obtain in the Faroe Islands. We need everyone to understand that the purpose of this campaign is to end the slaughter of pilot whales and other small cetaceans. That is our message. If we cloud that message by calling for the Faroese to adopt a vegan lifestyle, we will lose the argument. One step at a time.
If you are staying in our team housing: Be prepared to bring a sleeping bag, a towel, and anything else you might need to be comfortable in a shared housing space (think earplugs/eye mask/shower shoes, like you would bring in a hostel type of room). We also cannot guarantee everyone a bed, so be prepared to crash on the floor and be prepared to share a room with persons not of your gender. Please understand that there is limited space in each house by request of the home owners from whom we are renting. So please coordinate travel times with me so I can get you a place. We cannot have volunteers showing up and expecting to use these spaces because we have promised them to others for certain periods of time. You are still responsible for your own food.

General information: I highly suggest you bring power bars and backpacker meals to help cut costs. The Faroe Islands are VERY expensive. Take advantage of anything that will help you cut costs. A good website to explore, on top of your information packets, is here: http://www.faroeislands.com/default.aspx?pageid=9823 The website was last updated in 2013, however most of the information is still relevant. The team houses should be stocked with cooking utensils, if something is missing that the entire crew can benefit from Sea Shepherd will purchase necessitates for the house. Each team house will have Wifi. Wifi is very expensive on the islands, please keep that in mind. We probably will not allow video streaming (Netflix etc.) or Youtube, due to their incredible data usage.
And yes - they DO have LEADERS !!!
Campaign Organization: This campaign is being run by Sea Shepherd Global. Captain Alex Cornelissen is
the overall campaign director. Scott West and Rosie Kunneke are the ground crew directors. Lamya Essmalini is the sea crew director. Along side of them we will have 4-6 team leaders on the ground at any given time. Your daily interactions and guidance will be given by the team leaders. Elora West is our on ground Volunteer Coordinator- questions and scheduling before your arrival to the Faroe Islands should go through her at [email protected]
Getting around in Faroe Islands!
Getting to Torshavn: Getting to Torshavn from the Torshavn ferry drop off: This is very easy, it drops you off right in downtown Torshavn. You will have the contact information for your team leader, call them and let them know you have arrived. You can easily walk from the ferry to the Torshavn Hostel.
Getting to Torshavn from the Vagar airport: This is also quite simple. Take the bus that leaves the airport after each flight lands, and take it into downtown Torshavn. After you arrive, the same system applies. Call your team leader and they will direct you to the Hostel our Torshavn team will be staying at. http://www.ssl.fo/Default.asp?sida=3047 (Smyrill Bus Line)
Getting to Sandoy: 30 Minute Ferry Ride (Ferry Schedule: http://www.ssl.fo/Default.asp?sida=2962 If you are arriving late at night and the ferry is not running, please contact me and I will see if there is space in our Torshavn hostel for the night. There might not be, be prepared to spend the money on a hotel room the night you arrive and the night before you depart. You will want to be on the main island the day before you depart the islands. Getting to Sandoy from the Torshavn ferry drop off: You will need to catch the bus in Torshavn that takes you down the hill to the Sandoy ferry. We do not have this information currently, but we know that such a bus line does exist. You will be
able to ask the tourist office in downtown Torshavn to help you, or call your team leader and they can help you out. I am sorry if you were given miss-information before. I mixed up the Suduroy and Sandoy ferry during our previous communications.

Do tell us where you are ... all the time !!!
If I have not heard from you in a while: Please let us know where you are in your planning. Let us now if you are no longer able to participate in the campaign. Let us know if you have any questions about the campaign that we can answer. Once you have planned out your trip I will need you to let me know where you will be staying and for how long you intend to participate on campaign. You must be
assigned a team to participate in the campaign. Sea Shepherd does have team housing available, however space is currently limited as spots are filling up quickly. Please coordinate your preferred travel dates with me so I can try to get you a place in the free accommodations with the rest of your assigned team. And this is just some of the rules - that you have to follow - if you are that stupid to join the Sea Shepherd team. And please do remember, that Sea Shepherd did not save any whale in 2015 and in 2016 - and if you join them - get ready for some jailtime!
Stay tuned for some more leaked mails from Sea Shepherd - You're welcome, Faroe Islands ..!
